We are delighted to offer dental implants for the treatment of missing teeth.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are the gold standard treatment to replace missing teeth. They are a more natural replacement than dentures as they are artificial teeth attached directly to the jawbone.
The dental implant is made from medical titanium in the shape of a cylinder or screw. This serves as the replacement of the root of a natural tooth. A crown is attached to the implant to serve as the tooth which is seen in the mouth.
Dental implant procedure
The process of getting a dental implant takes months to complete and involves three phases:
Placement of the implant - a small surgery is carried out to place the dental implant into the jawbone and this is allowed to integrate over a period of three-six months. Attaching the post - A short post is attached to the implant to allow the gum to heal around it and form a protective cuff around the implant.
A bespoke crown is fitted through the post into the implant
Why choose dental implants?
A dental implant is a way of replacing a missing teeth that is non destructive. The reason for this is, no other teeth need to be touched to fill the gap. A bridge is a destructive option as teeth either side need to be cut down to make space for the bridge to be fitted.
Dentures can replace several gaps but will always be bigger than the natural teeth in order to stay in. Dentures often use clasps at grab onto other teeth to help keep them in and generally need replacing after a few years as as the bone underneath may shrink away leading to a poor fit.
Am I suitable for dental implants?
Most adults can have dental implants but there are a few exceptions. Every case is different and your dentist will discuss with you how suitable you are in the initial consultation.
Certain lifestyle habits such as heavy smoking, medical conditions and treatments involving immunosuppression can affect how the implant heals within the bone and impact the gums around the implant.
